The Theory of Stroke and Roll
What is 'Stroke and Roll'?
Stroke and Roll is the art within the game of bowling; achieving maximum roll, with maximum consistency and was passed down from the great Don Campbell to Randy Chism and a host of others. The key focal point (secret) comes from the shoulder, more specifically the ball within the joint of the shoulder, creating great repeat-ability and feel. This is done by using 'NO' muscle, 'NO' lift, and 'NO' squeeze throughout the swing. This allows the shoulder to open in the backswing and then close at the finish, while being in proper leverage position at the Foul Line. The powerful roll will come from the shoulder as it closes at the release, creating great rotation and continuation on the ball down lane. When a person experiences this first hand they are often amazed from the result, not believing the lack of effort being used.
View the list of PBA and PWBA 'Stroke and Rollers', many of whom are in the PBA and PWBA Hall of Fame. This might help you to better understand what 'Stroke and Roll' is all about and its diversity from one player to another. The foundation to the theory remains the same for each of these bowlers. It is an art that can be developed and learned, whether your game is traditional or not. Jason Belmonte, one of the top two handed bowlers in the World, is a prime example of a nontraditional bowler who is a 'Stroke and Roll Player.

Here are a few of the many PBA Players who utilize this theory of 'Stroke and Roll': Parker Bohn III, Brian Voss, Pete Weber, Chris Barnes, Tommy Jones and the two handed bowler, Jason Belmonte.
Belmonte is now known as having the highest carry percentage of all tour players currently and for good reason. He now has a greater leverage position at the line and he understands this position he has put himself in (thanks to Ron Hoppe, one of the top coaches in the game)! Knowledge and understanding are extremely valuable and vital keys within the game. As a result, now Jason Belmonte's shoulder closes fully because of his new finish position. Belmonte achieves maximum roll with maximum consistency as he projects the ball down lane. Mr. Belmonte is going to win for a very long time!
Those on Tour who utilize 'Stroke and Roll' consistently win and for good reason. They hold fundamental keys that are truths in the way the game is meant to be played.
We hope to share these insights with you!

The late Don Campbell, who knew the art of 'Stroke and Roll', made his living bowling throughout the United States. Don did this before the PBA Tour was ever formed. Rumors have it that Mr. Campbell had the opportunity to join the tour at its inception, but refused to pay the fees in order to join. Don said he never bowled on the tour for that simple reason. Don saw himself as "The Show" and if you wanted to see the show, you would need to pay him to perform and not the other way around. Don was truly one of a kind and one of the All Time Greats in the game of bowling.
Don toured with Hall of Famer, Buzz Fazio. Those who had the opportunity to see him saw what a great showman he was on the lanes. Don loved performing his trick shots and the approach was his stage. He performed well into his 80's when he passed away, sustaining his love affair with the game of bowling. Stroke and Roll was the name he gave it; the art within the game very few have ever experienced. He embraced the theory of 'Stroke and Roll' as Gospel!
Don toured with Hall of Famer, Buzz Fazio in the 1960's, putting on clinics of 'trick' shots.
As Don aged, most all of his time was spent in Colorado where he worked with many bowlers most of whom had talent and a strong passion for the game. Those who heard the message all excelled at a much higher level.
Don was not very tolerant of bowlers getting frustrated on the lanes while learning under him. Some thought it was the respect he was looking for, but Don understood how much frustration will breed muscle and tension. Don would waste little time with them, often leaving without saying a word, knowing they would likely never get the message.
When the lights are on and the competition is under way, the feel of a calm one-piece swing, will breed great confidence. Those who listened to Don soon elevated their game dramatically. They became some of the most elite shooters in the Denver Metro area. The lane conditions or the equipment being used did not matter, they would all be near or at the top.

A good example of this would be Randy Chism who first met Don at age 19 and cashed in every Regional Tournament he ever competed in. Randy competed at a very high level for the next 20 years, retiring from competition at age 38. Randy retired so young do to the 9 knee & ankle surgeries he had undergone in his young life. Many called Randy the 'Carmel Kid', due to the ball he most often used. He won bowler of the year in 1991. That final year of competition Randy averaged 234, 236 and 238 in three different houses, using a 'Carmel' White Dot (a plastic ball). Don often said, "It is not about the equipment but the bowler" and would often use a rubber house ball to prove his point. Don always said, "The cream will always rise to the top!"
LET'S GET ROLLING!!!
We hope you are now interested in learning more about us and the 'Theory of Stroke and Roll'. We are passionate about teaching the game of bowling and working with all levels of bowlers, whether elite or beginner, young or old.
On our first meeting we will gather information along with taking some 'Pre-Instruction Video'. From the information gathered we will create a Personal Program for you with written timelines and commitments for the Student AND Instructor. Together we will establish goals while creating both a vision and a plan. Instruction of the game is what we specialize in with a deep focus of the physical and the mental sides of the game as well. We can certainly help you and we look very forward to meeting you!
